Often hidden in perpetual mountain mist, ‘Tergo La- Doorway to Treasures’, is one of the most significant mountain passes in Haa Dzongkhag. However, this site is more than just a pass but an important passway steeped in history and surrounded by striking natural beauty. Tergo La opens the gates to many of the sacred sites (nyes) hidden in its valleys, caves, and lakes, which were once concealed by Guru Rinpoche. Traditionally, the pass served as an important route linking Haa with Samtse, used by traders, pilgrims, and local communities long before modern roads were built. For generations, Tergo La was a lifeline that enabled the movement of goods, cultural exchange, and spiritual journeys between valleys.

Tergo La on a clear morning in winter

In addition to its heritage value, Tergo La has gained international recognition for its trekking route. The Tergo La Trek was featured by CNN as one of ‘The World’s Best Hiking Trails’, drawing global attention to Haa’s remote and unspoiled landscapes. The route winds through quiet forest trails and rugged mountain paths, opening up to distant views of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. Along the way, yak herders’ camps and far-off settlements enhance the feeling of remoteness, creating an experience that feels far removed from the modern world.

At 4200 meters, Tergo La offers breathtaking views of the sacred Mount Jomolhari and the surrounding peaks of the Himalayan range. Spend time walking along the ridge to appreciate the vastness of the JKSNR (Jigme Khesar Strict Nature Reserve) landscape.
