One of Bhutan’s most magnificent mountain passes, Chele La gives travelers a unique opportunity to take in the high-altitude beauty of Bhutan. Located between the Paro and Haa valleys, Chele La sits at an elevation of about 3,988 meters, making it one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan. The journey to the pass is as memorable as the destination itself, winding through dense forests of pine, fir, and rhododendron.
Stargazing at Chele La is a quiet and a rewarding experience, surrounded by mountains, stillness, and open skies. One of the best times to photograph and enjoy the night sky here is during autumn, when the weather is generally clearer and more stable. Spring can also offer good stargazing opportunities, but weather conditions remain unpredictable.
On clear nights, the sky above Chele La reveals remarkable detail. The Milky Way can often be seen stretching across the dark sky, and on especially good nights, the broader galactic arc patterns become visible to the naked eye. With very little light pollution in the area, the stars appear sharp and steady, making even simple stargazing deeply satisfying without the need for special equipment. You can drive to Chele La or take a taxi there, however you must arrive here before sunset. The sunset view from Chele La is also something you should not miss. Wait for the horizons to turn auburn and then watch the darkness engulf it. As the night descends, the stars light up the sky.
For those willing to walk a little further, an hour-and-a-half hike uphill from Chele La leads to the sky burial grounds. This elevated and open location offers uninterrupted 360-degree views of the sky, making it an exceptional spot for night sky observation. The sense of space here is striking, with the horizon falling away in all directions and the stars seeming even more expansive above.
During the day, the same spot offers a completely different but equally memorable experience. From the sky burial grounds, sweeping views of both Paro and Haa valleys unfold below. If you’re inspired to travel to Chele La for stargazing, be sure to come well prepared, bring warm clothing, essential camping gear, and enough food and supplies if you plan to stay overnight.
Whether visited by day or night, Chele La offers rare moments to connect with both the landscape and the sky beyond.
